S-STEM: BRIDGING OUR STUDENTS TO THEIR FUTURE

Freshman S-STEM Scholars Program
For
2014 Fall Semester Incoming Freshman Underrepresented Students
(Academic Year 2014-2015)

The Department of Biomedical, Chemical and Environmental Engineering (BCEE) in the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) at the University of Cincinnati (UC) is part of a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant, Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM),that is designed to increase the number of students who enroll in and graduate from the BCEE undergraduate degree programs and subsequently attend graduate school or pursue entrepreneurial careers. S-STEM students are expected to become business leaders, technology managers, engineers, scientists or faculty in institutions of higher education.

The NSF S-STEM program offers financial support to a select group of BCEE students. Students will receive stipends ranging from $3.500 to $4,500 per year from their sophomore through senior years. The S-STEM program has four tracks:

  • MS-ACCEND degree program
this is for students considering careers as Research Engineers/Scientists or Faculty at an institution of higher educationafter completing a PhD degree. Students receive both aBS degree and an MS degree. The curriculum for this track includes research experiential learning coursework in the selected engineering discipline.

  • Graduate School Preparation Track
This is for students considering becoming leaders in starting new, technology-based companies. Students receive a BS degree with a minor in Entrepreneurship.

  • MBA-ACCEND program
This is for students considering becoming Technology Managers. Students receive both a BS degree an MBA degree with a Certificate in Entrepreneurship. The curriculum for this track includes business management courses in addition to regular undergraduate engineering courses.

  • Professional Preparation Track
This is for students considering becoming leaders in starting new, technology-based companies. Students receive a BS degree with a minor in Entrepreneurship.

Students are typically recruited into the S-STEM program in their sophomore year. A select group of five students from underrepresented, ethnic-minority groups will be selected in their freshman year to receive help during their freshman year to prepare for application to the S-STEM program in their sophomore year. This group will be exposed to some of the educational opportunities they are likely to experience in the S-STEM program through specially-designed experiential learning projects which are described in the attached document, Freshman S-STEM Scholars Program Description . Students will also receive a stipend of $1,500 during their freshman year. This experience will enhance their chances of being selected for S-STEM in their sophomore year.

Interested students are encouraged to complete the application and submit the required supporting documents as soon as possible. Review for selection starts on July 31, 2014 and ends on August 15, 2014, so apply soon.
